The annual Groundfish Stock Assessment and Fisheries Evaluation (SAFE) Economic Status Report is produced by staff of the Economic and Social Sciences Research Program (ESSRP) at the National Marine Fisheries Service’s (NMFS) Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC). Refer to the most recent year’s Economic Status Report for staff contact information.

Data in the SAFE tables and SAFE .csv files are aggregated to satisfy requirements for public disclosure of fisheries data–in general, three entities reporting for federal fisheries data and four entities reporting for State of Alaska data. A value of ‘-9999’ indicates a confidential value that does not meet the threshold for public disclosure.

Overview

Tables 25 - 35 of the groundfish Economic Status Report present first-wholesale prices and value (revenue) estimates for catch in the groundfish fisheries in the waters off Alaska. All tables present data for catch from fisheries managed both under a federal Fisheries Management Plan (FMP) and by the state of Alaska.

Primary data sources for estimates of groundfish first-wholesale prices and value are:

Unless otherwise noted, groundfish production volume is sourced from NMFS AKR production reports. Note that meal production is not fully accounted for in these data due to secondary meal production by byproduct-only processors that are not subject to state or federal product reporting requirements. This is particularly true of the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) shoreside sector. Gross value and price estimates for groundfish reflect prices from ADF&G’s COAR Product Report appended to NMFS AKR production report data per the Alaska Fisheres Information Network (AKFIN) product pricing index.

Table 25 reports weight of production and gross value of groundfish products in the fisheries off Alaska by species and product type.

Table 26 reports prices per pound of groundfish products in the fisheries off Alaska by species, product type and processing mode (at-sea or shoreside).

Data compiled and provided by the Alaska Fisheries Information Network (AKFIN). National Marine Fisheries Service, P.O. Box 15700, Seattle, WA 98115-0070.

Table 27 estimates total product value per round metric ton of retained catch in the groundfish fisheries off Alaska by processor type (mothership, catcher/processors [C/P], and shoreside processors), species and area (Bering sea/Aleutian Islands [BSAI] and Gulf of Alaska [GOA]). Estimates of retained catch are sourced from NMFS AKR Blend and CAS data.

Table 28 presents production weights of groundfish products in the fisheries off Alaska by species, product type and area (BSAI and GOA).

Table 29 reports production weights of groundfish products in the fisheries off Alaska by species, product type and processing sector (at-sea and shoreside).

Table 30

Table 30 reports production and gross value of non-groundfish products in the commercial fisheries of Alaska by species group and area of processing (BSAI and GOA). Both production and wholesael value estimates are sourced from ADF&G COAR product report data. Note that the CSV data for Table 30 show nominal first wholesale values, whereas Table 30 as published in the SAFE show values deflated to the most recent year’s dollars using the Gross Domestic Product Chain-type Price Index.

Table 31 reports gross product value of the groundfish catch off Alaska by area (BSAI and GOA) and processing sector (at-sea and shoreside).

Tables 32 and 33

Source: NMFS Alaska Region At-sea Production Reports; ADF&G Commercial Operators Annual Reports (COAR); and NMFS Alaska Region permit data. Data compiled and provided by the Alaska Fisheries Information Network (AKFIN). National Marine Fisheries Service, P.O. Box 15700, Seattle, WA 98115-0070.

Table 32 reports gross product value of the catcher/processor (C/P) groundfish catch off Alaska by vessel category, vessel-length class, and area.

Table 33 reports gross product value per vessel of the C/P groundfish catch off Alaska by vessel category, vessel-length class, and area. Value per vessel is calculated by dividing the combined product value of all groundfish production for vessels in the category by the number of vessels in the category.

For Tables 32 and 33, C/P categories are assigned based on the predominant gear-type used and type of products produced:

C/Ps are divided into length classes as follows:

Tables 34 and 35

Tables 34 and 35 report the gross product value of the groundfish processed by shoreside processors and groundfish gross product value as a percentage of the gross product value of all species processed by shoreside processors by processor group. With the exception of the Bering Sea pollock processors, we classify the processors primarily by their location. The processor groups are as follows:

Note that Tables 34 and 35 are assembled entirely from COAR production data and thus are not directly comparable with the other groundfish wholesale production data tables.
