Ocean Life in Alaska

Why study fish?

There are over 25,000 species of fish in the ocean. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are ferocious, like the great white shark or docile like most other fish. Some are good to eat, like sablefish and cod, and are a source of food and jobs.

In Alaska, seafood is king! The largest by volume fishery in the U.S.A is the Alaska walleye pollock fishery, where 1.9 billion pounds were harvested in 2010. The fish that make up the fisheries in our federal waters of Alaska provide jobs, contribute significantly to our Nation's economy, and are a source of healthy seafood.
