Current Activities
Jordan is a member of the Salmon Ocean Ecology & Bycatch (SOEBA) group within the Ecosystem Monitoring and Analysis program. His current work is examining Chinook and chum salmon bycatch in the groundfish fleets in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska; analyzing the relationships between fisher portfolios and revenue variability over time; characterizing spatial behaviors of the Bering Sea pollock fleet in response to climate and other dynamics; developing new models for pink salmon forecasts in southeast Alaska. He has also taught a number of workshops on improving the visual communication of data and scientific information, as well as programming tutorials in R (https://github.com/jordanwatson/R_Tutorials). Background
Jordan has a B.S. in chemistry from the University of California Santa Barbara, M.S. in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences from the University of Washington, and Ph.D. in Fisheries from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His past work has included shark bycatch mitigation, biogeochemistry, abalone restoration, phytoplankton / zooplankton / seabird ecology, and more. He has worked with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the United States Antarctic Program, the Prince William Sound Science Center, and the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center.
