Current Activities
John is a research fisheries biologist with the Recruitment, Energetics, and Coastal Assessment program at the Auke Bay Lab. Currently he is a principle investigator for the Gulf Watch Alaska long-term monitoring program funded by the Exxon Valdez oil spill Trustee Council, monitoring the impacts of recovering humpback whale populations on herring populations and the over-wintering energetics of fish in Prince William Sound. He is also involved with the Arctic Coastal Ecosystem Survey (ACES), a collaborative effort between federal, university, and local researchers to understand the nearshore ecosystems of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

John is a member of the Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Network and the Large Whale Disentanglement team. He is frequently called upon to provide biological expertise on marine mammal issues.

Background
John received a M.S. from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in fisheries and completed his undergraduate studies in zoology and marine biology at the University of New Hampshire. He has worked across Alaska for over 20 years studying fish, birds, and mammals.
