Phone: (907) 789-6632
Address: Auke Bay Laboratories

Current Activities
John currently manages facilities for the Auke Bay Laboratories (ABL) totaling 145,000 heated square feet at three locations in Juneau, plus a remote field research station at Little Port Walter on Baranoff Island, and two field research stations on the Pribilof Islands of Saint Paul, and Saint George. The Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute (TSMRI) in Juneau is ABL headquarters, and consists of 71,000 square feet of laboratories and administrative space to support the premier fisheries scientists in the country. In 2013 TSMRI received the prestigious “Lean, Clean, and Green Presidential GreenGov” award for the unique way the facility is heated. Hydro-electric power from the local power utility is used to extract heat from seawater using heat pumps. This system provided 100% of the heat required and saves an estimated 60,000 gallons of fuel oil and $130,000 dollars per year in fuel savings while introducing no CO2 to the atmosphere.

John received his B.S. in 1986 from Penn State University and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Post Graduate School in 1992. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1986 to 2006 as a Surface Warfare Officer, primarily as an engineer and operations planner. Upon retiring from the military in 2006, he was employed as the Facilities Planner for US Coast Guard District Seventeen for all of Alaska. In 2010, he transferred his federal service to NOAA taking his current position as the Facilities Planner for the Auke Bay Laboratories.
