Current Activities
Ellen has been a Research Fishery Biologist at the Auke Bay Laboratories since 1995. Currently, she works in the Ecosystem Monitoring and Assessment program. Her research is focused on developing ecological indicators for the recruitment of groundfish and anadromous fish to provide qualitative measures of future recruitment to the fisheries. Currently, she is using satellite and fisheries oceanography survey data to index coastal rearing conditions used by age-0 and age-1 sablefish in the Gulf of Alaska and age-0 walleye pollock in the eastern Bering Sea. She is interested in understanding how climate variation affects the physical and biological features of large marine ecosystems to better support fishery managers and fishermen.

Ellen has a B.S. in biology from the University of Alaska Southeast, an M.S. in Fishery Resources from the University of Idaho, and a Ph.D. in fisheries from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her past research included ocean salmon research, salmon habitat restoration and enhancement, salmon growth studies, and walleye pollock recruitment studies.
