Current Activities
Genetic stock identification using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Chinook salmon bycatch from the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska trawl fisheries; sockeye salmon from District 104 purse seine and District 101 gillnet fisheries; and juvenile Chinook salmon from the Northern Bering Sea. Chuck is also analyzing Chinook salmon SNPs for a Parental Based Tagging project (PBT) involving fish from Little Port Walter hatchery. Currently he is the genetics lab manager in addition to research duties.

Chuck has a B. S. degree in Marine Science with a concentration in biology from Southampton College (LIU). He worked as a foreign fishery observer in 1984, 1985, and 1986; for the Army Corps of Engineers at the Little Goose (1985) and Lower Granite Dams on the Snake River (1986) as a fish transport technician. Chuck was hired by Auke Bay Laboratories in July of 1986 to collect genetic and brain parasite samples of sockeye salmon, and later performed the analyses of brain parasite samples in the lab. Chuck continued working with the U.S./Canada salmon interception treaty research project to establish genetic baseline data for sockeye, chinook, chum, and pink salmon in southeast Alaska and northwest British Columbia using allozymes. Among Chuck’s mixed stock analyses were: chum salmon incidentally caught in the Bering Sea pollock trawl fishery; adult chinook and sockeye salmon seized in illegal high seas fishing activities to determine continent of origin; juvenile and immature sockeye salmon from the Bering Sea to determine region of origin as part of the NPAFC, Bering- Aleutian Salmon International Survey (BASIS), and North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) cooperative research. More recently Chuck participated in development SNP baseline for sockeye and chinook salmon in southeast Alaska and northern British Columbia.
