Current Activities
Julie Mocklin is responsible for bowhead photo-identification work at NMML and maintaining the bowhead whale photographic database. She is interested in the application of photo-ID as a tool to determine life-history traits such as survival, abundance, reproduction rates, growth rates, distribution, and residency times in different areas. Her master’s thesis work at the University of Washington relies on match data to study migration patterns and plot spatial/temporal changes using GIS software.
Background
Julie graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1997 with a degree in wildlife and fisheries biology. She has participated in numerous marine mammal aerial and shipboard surveys, targeting harbor porpoise, right whales, Tursiops, belugas, and bowhead whales. Before joining NMML, she held numerous contracting positions with various NOAA labs including the Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast Fisheries Science Centers.
