Current Activities
Cynthia Christman is a biologist for the Cetacean Assessment and Ecology Program. She supports large whale research and assists with aerial surveys in the Bering, Chuckchi, and Beaufort Seas. She is responsible for aerial survey field work, data management, and reports, and she contributes to the Chuckchi Offshore Monitoring in Drilling Area (COMIDA), Bowhead Whale Aerial Survey Project (BWASP), and Pacific Right Whale Evaluation Study (PRIEST) surveys.
Background
Cynthia joined the National Marine Mammal Laboratory in 2009. Prior to this, she worked with Cascadia Research Collective and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center on a marine mammal shipboard survey in the Gulf of Alaska. From 2005-2008, she worked at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, MA, where she supported North Atlantic right whale aerial surveys, harbor and gray seal aerial surveys, and marine mammal shipboard surveys. From 2001-2004, Cynthia was a research assistant for the Marine Mammal Education and Research Program at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA. She conducted aerial, small boat, and shore-based research on harbor seals and gray whales while earning her degree. Cynthia received a B.S. degree in Biology and Zoology from Humboldt State University in 2004.
