Pinnipeds - Leopard Seals (Hydrurga leptonyx)
Leopard seals are found around the pack ice edges of the Antarctic continent. The head of the leopard seal is shaped more like a reptile than a seal. Leopard seals are solitary and few pups have ever been observed. Females are larger than the males averaging 1000 pounds, while the males average 800 pounds. NMML's Antarctic Ecosystem Program was responsible for research on Antarctic phocids in previous research years.
