Pinnipeds - Bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus)
Bearded seals have fur that is generally gray to brown and unpatterned. The small size of the head and the squareness of the flippers are noticeable when seen out of the water. Adults are 2.1 to 2.4 m in length; the females are slightly longer than the males. Pups are born between mid March and early May; they have a short nursing period and are weaned at 12 to 19 days.
NMML researchers track Bearded seals with satellite-linked transmitters to understand their habitat ranges throughout the year.
