Delphinapterus leucasWhere do belugas live?
Belugas are distributed widely in Arctic and subarctic waters and are usually associated with areas seasonally covered by sea ice. Five populations of belugas occur in Alaska waters and are identified by their summering grounds: Cook Inlet, Bristol Bay, eastern Bering Sea, eastern Chukchi Sea, and the Beaufort Sea. The most isolated of these is the Cook Inlet population, separated from the others by the Alaska Peninsula.
What do belugas eat?
Belugas feed on a wide variety of prey species such as crustaceans and freshwater, marine, and anadromous fish, focusing on specific species when they are seasonally abundant.
