Welcome Aboard the Polar Sea: Settling In, Casting Off, and Safety Briefing

Onboard the USCG Polar Sea icebreaker.
Today, we took our motion-sickness meds, then boarded the Polar Sea and settled into our compact living spaces. At our first quarters meeting, we were welcomed aboard by Captain Uchytil, introduced to the rest of the crew and given official crew members' caps. At 13:30, the Polar Sea left dock and headed for the calm, beautiful horizon. After our cast off, we had a safety briefing that included protocols for fire, flooding, etc., man-overboard, and abandon ship. The captain then conducted drills that tested our abilities to navigate through the multiple stairways, doors, and obstructions to the appropriate muster locations. After the briefing, the crew of the Polar Sea introduced us to their Sunday tradition: Sundae Sundays. What a way to end the day, yum!
