Extended Delay in Kodiak
As you may have noticed from the NOAA ShipTracker site, we were unable
to leave port earlier this week as we hoped. We remain in Kodiak while
the team of engineers and crew continue to work on the mechanical
issues. We are now hoping to sail later this week. The officers and crew
of the Oscar Dyson continue to be gracious hosts and have tried to
accommodate our needs as much as possible while we remain in Kodiak.
Unfortunately, there's not much we can do to further prepare for the
cruise until we have a confirmed departure date. Thankfully, the
internet allows us to keep in touch with the office in Seattle and
accomplish other tasks and assignments related to our research. We did
take time yesterday to test our new GPS and radio equipment. These items
are essential to safety and communication during our operations and it
was good to familiarize ourselves with the various options and menus.
We are also continually monitoring sea-ice imagery provided to us by the
National Ice Center. With our shortened schedule, knowing where the ice
edge is, how it is moving and what type of ice is in an area, will be
crucial to maximizing our remaining time.
